Clyde Barrow to Henry

10 April 1934

Clyde Barrow was one half of the infamous criminal couple, Bonnie and Clyde. By 1933 Bonnie and Clyde had taken 13 lives. On 10 April 1934 Clyde wrote Henry Ford, bragging that their stolen V‑8 was “still the best car out there.” Six weeks later, on 23 May 1934, the duo were ambushed and killed in that very Ford on a Louisiana road.

Dwight D. Eisenhower to Allied Expeditionary Force

5 June, 1944 

As Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, Eisenhower wrote this message to hearten Allied soldiers, airmen, and sailors before D-Day, emphasizing the operation’s joint nature and the promise of liberation from Nazi tyranny. Copies went to 175,000 troops as they boarded transports on the eve of the invasion.

George Washington to Robert Cary and Co.

20 June, 1762

George Washington, the first President of the United States, is known for his leadership, courage, and patriotism. But before he became the leader of a new nation, he was a young man trying to make his way in the business world. In 1762, at the age of 30, Washington wrote a letter to the British firm Robert Cary & Co., his creditors, outlining his concerns about the state of the tobacco trade in Virginia.

Wilbur Wright to the Smithsonian Institution

30 May, 1899

The breakthrough of the first controlled, sustained flight by the Wright Brothers occurred in 1903. However, in 1899, Wilbur Wright wrote a letter to the Smithsonian institution to obtain papers and a list of other publications on aeronautics research. This is the first documented proof that Wilbur Wright had become interested in the possibility of human flight, 4 years before it actually happened.
